Te Puna Mātauranga, formerly the Nayland College Library, was a Ministry of Education Weathertightness Remediation Programme project.
Originally constructed in 1965, the former library was significantly altered again around 2000, adding a series of spaces to the perimeter of the building and opening through to these from the inside. The building has suffered with repeated and ongoing weathertightness failure related to roof junctions and design solutions involving internal gutters and downpipes, arising from unconventional detailing, multiple penetrations, multiple roofing materials, insufficient roof pitch and flashing cover.
This project took the opportunity to reconfigure the entire roofing system, replacing all windows, doors, and external walls, and reform the building frontage to envisage a design that could present the traditional aspects of a wharenui frontage. Noble worked the the design team, MoE, kura and Ngāti Koata to reinvent this space into a safe and integrative space now known as Te Puna Mātauranga.
