Cawthron Institute’s National Algae Research Centre (NARC) is a 435m2 facility sited at the Glenduan Cawthron Aquaculture Park, north of Nelson. It is a pragmatic, quality extension of the existing facility. The Institute is New Zealand’s largest private science organisation, with more than 300 scientists.

NARC offers a step-change in the Institute’s capacity to undertake research into how native red seaweed species can be harnessed to reduce livestock emissions when added to cattle feed, boost aquaculture yields, and be used for pain management. It allows the Institute’s scientists to further explore the economic and environmental value of different seaweed species and is a critical component in growing New Zealand’s aquaculture sector from $600m in 2020 to $3bn in 2035.
